Robbers got $6,000 from City Trust

CITY Trust lost some $6,000 to the two masked men that robbed the bank on Friday, a police official disclosed yesterday.

The police official, who requested anonymity, said the money was taken from the cash register.

Investigators also found out that City Trust Bank had no surveillance camera installed in the building.

Another source from the Department of Public Safety said the gun used was a .25 pistol.

Only one suspect was carrying a gun at the time, and the robbers used a get-away vehicle, police said.

The bank’s acting manager, Lou Johnson, said on Sunday that “it’s business as usual at City Trust. (Our customers’) deposits remain safe. Due to the ongoing investigation, we’re not at liberty to disclose the amount stolen by the robbers, but here’s what I can say: the amount is insignificant and will not affect the bank’s operations.”

DPS spokesman Pete C. Muna said the two robbers entered the bank at 1:43 p.m., put on their ski-masks and demanded money.

One of the suspects fired a handgun once, but no one was hurt.

Muna said the suspects used a vehicle parked behind J.E. Tenorio Building.

The police and the Federal Bureau of Investigation are conducting a joint investigation, Muna said.

Commonwealth Development Authority Chairman Juan S. Tenorio earlier said it was the second robbery to happen in the CNMI. He said the first occurred in the 1980s in Chalan Kanoa involving a different bank.

But Deputy Public Safety Commissioner for Operations Santiago Tudela told Variety yesterday that Friday’s incident could be the first bank robbery in the commonwealth.
