THE Superior Court has handed a two-year and six months jail term to one of two persons accused of robbing a garment factory worker in San Antonio last year.
Following a plea agreement, Associate Judge Juan T. Lizama sentenced T. Knight Sanders Sasao 10 years and three months, all suspended except 30 months and 15 days. Lizama said the 19-year-old Sasao will be placed on supervised probation for the remainder of the 10 years and three months after his release from jail.
Lizama also ordered the defendant to pay a $500 fine, $200 in assessment and probation fees, and perform 200 hours of community work service.
The judge said Sasao will pay $400 restitution to the victim and write a letter of apology to her.
Sasao and co-defendant Cornielle Church were charged with robbery, conspiracy, assault and battery, theft, disturbing the peace and resisting arrest.
Sasao and his counsel, Assistant Public Defender Jeffrey Moots, entered a plea agreement with the government represented by Assistant Attorney General Barry A. Hirshbein. The defendant pleaded guilty to robbery, conspiracy and resisting arrest.
The government recommended the dismissal of the remaining charges as part of the agreement. The court granted the motion.
On Sept. 5, 2001, according to court documents, Sasao and Church conspired in robbing a woman of her purse containing cash and other personal effects worth less than $250.
The 32-year-old victim claimed she lost her bag containing $210 cash, her bank book, Social Security card and entry permit.
