HAGATñA — Several hotels, restaurants, the University of Guam and Guam Community College participated in the Guam Hotel & Restaurant Association Career Fair held on Saturday at the ExpoHall of Micronesia Mall.
Twenty-five booths, which included One-Stop Career Center, Westin Resort Guam, Guam Hotel Okura, Denny’s of Guam, Community First Guam Federal Credit Union, were set up to accommodate job seekers. The “Employability Check-Up” was conducted in collaboration with the Department of Labor.
Loy Gutierrez, a 52-year-old accounting clerk at Nissan Motors in Upper Tumon, was one of those who filled out an application form.
“I’m here to apply for positions in which I could work part time, evenings or weekends because I’m presently employed. I just want to get a second job because I am much settled and satisfied with my present employment. All I need is some extra (source of income),” Gutierrez said.
Gutierrez is hopeful that the job fair will help him land a job in the tourism industry. “I really hope I can get a job. It does not necessarily have to be in accounting. It could be in housekeeping, kitchen or whatever in which I can work effectively also.”
Community First Guam Federal Credit Union was looking for a senior credit officer. “We received about (12) applications since this morning,” said Lynn Leon Guerrero, branch manager at Harmon.
Westin Resort Guam needed about 10 employees to join its ranks. Romer Tabano, banquet manager, said that business was picking up at the hotel, hence, the need for additional employees.
Meanwhile, over a hundred applicants had lined up at Kentucky Fried Chicken’s booth.
The food company was looking for restaurant managers, marketing officers, data entry clerks, among others. “We’re not opening any new restaurants but we’re looking for qualified candidates,” said Joel Valenzuela, assistant training manager.
Gutierrez appreciates the efforts of the Department of Labor and GHRA.
“I think this is encouraging because this facilitates al the steps one has to go through in looking for a job. I think this is very, very good,” Gutierrez said.
