3 Indonesian special forces officers accused of murder

JAKARTA (PINA) — A high-ranking Indonesian military officer said three army special force, or Kopassus, officers had been accused of violating the criminal code for killing West Papuan leader Theys Hiyo Eluay.

The Jakarta Post reported that deputy chief of the National Military Police, Brig. Gen. Hendardji also underlined that the three were guilty of insubordination.

This was considering that “there had never been any order from their superiors to kill Theys,” the Jakarta Post quoted him as saying.

Hendardji further said that Aristoteles Masoka—the pro-independence leader’s driver and the only known key witness—was presumed dead.

He said: “Nevertheless, during the investigation we also concluded that there will be more military officers declared suspects in the murder.”
