HONIARA (Pacnews) — A former Cabinet minister in Solomon Islands says Prime Minister Allan Kemakeza and his government would be held responsible for any negative effect on the people and the environment if it goes ahead with plans to import hazardous wastes from Taiwan.
Thomas Weape, who is a member from Makira, was responding to widespread claims that Solomon Islands has given Taiwan the green light to dump its wastes in the country.
Makira has been identified as the suitable place to dump Taiwan’s industrial wastes.
Weape has warned the people of Haununu and Rawo of the pollution that will be caused on their environment. He said they should not be easily swayed by promises of “big money” from Premival Co.
Pacnews was told that Taiwan has offered to pay $35 million per shipment.
