SUVA (Pacnews) — The rapid pace of globalization in the Asia Pacific region has also seen growing social and income inequalities.
This was reflected by growing poverty and other inequalities, as a new study conducted by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for the region found out.
The report, which will be presented to government ministers attending the next session of the commission’s forum later this month in Bangkok, warns that “globalization coupled with demographic dynamics is resulting in increased exclusion and social dislocation in some situations.”
Titled, “Sustainable Social Development in a Period of Rapid Globalization: Challenges, Opportunities and Policy Options,” the report said the situation is reflected in deepening poverty.
The cause of the poverty is caused by social and income inequalities as well as social and ethnic violence.
Other factors that contribute to the break-up of social groups civil conflicts, the prevalence of people with disability, the HIV/AIDS epidemic and fall-out from the 1997 financial crisis.
The report found that some people are being excluded from sustainable livelihood, decent employment, minimum earnings and consumption, physical and human capital development.
