HE meant what he said. After announcing last week that he would start implementing cost-cutting measures to prevent deficit spending, House Speaker Heinz S. Hofschneider started reducing the working hours in his office.
Hofschneider, in a May 1 letter, informed Gov. Juan N. Babauta and Lt. Gov. Diego T. Benavente that he had cut the working hours at the Office of the Speaker from eight to six hours effective last April 29.
“Regrettably, in light of the implementation of the administration’s decision to reduce the legislative branch’s budget by 16.3 percent in the yearly funding level, it has become necessary for the Office of the Speaker to implement cost-cutting measures to prevent deficit spending. Consequently,…(my) office commenced to operate office hours beginning at 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and 12:30 (noon) to 2:30 p.m.,” Hofschneider, R-Saipan, told Babauta and Benavente.
