Guam EPA: 9 polluted beaches

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — The public should be advised of nine beaches that were found to be polluted above accepted bacteriological standards, the Guam Environmental Protection Agency announced in a press release.

Guam EPA reported it took samples at 43 locations. The agency advises the public to be cautious when swimming, fishing or playing at the following beaches:

  • Hågat: Bangi Beach, Togcha Beach bridge and cemetery
  • Chalan Pago: Pago Bay
  • Hagåtña: Hagåtña Bayside Park, Padre Palomo Park Beach
  • Talo’fo’fo’: Talo’fo’fo’ Bay
  • Tamuning: Dungca’s Beach, East Hagåtña Bay, Trinchera Beach

Being in these waters may result in minor illnesses such as sore throat or diarrhea or serious illness such as meningitis, encephalitis or severe gastroenteritis, Guam EPA said in the release.

“Children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems have a greater chance of getting sick when they come in contact with contaminated water,” Guam EPA said.

Pago Bay is seen Wednesday, Sept. 13, 2023.
