HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — The Department of Corrections is “a safer place” after the graduation of 30 new corrections officers, Director Fred Bordallo said during a graduation ceremony on Friday morning.
“With the population that we have that has increased and it has been known, the media has quoted me saying, it’s a dangerous place, but with these new corrections officers it is going to be a safer place at the Department of Corrections,” Bordallo said.
On Friday morning at the LeoPalace Resort, a graduation ceremony was held for DOC to welcome 30 new corrections officers who completed the first training cycle of the year.
While Bordallo, in his opening remarks, said the graduation will make DOC safer, considering the record number of inmates and detainees, he told the new corrections officers they will continue to be tested after finishing their 12 weeks of training.
“You’re going to be tested. Their interpersonal skills are going to be challenged and their ability to be honest and (show) integrity,” Bordallo said before encouraging the new officers to always find ways to “improve themselves.”
Acting Gov. Josh Tenorio also extended his remarks, thanking the 30 new corrections officers for taking on the role of a public servant that “has way more challenges than many others.”
“They are tasked at making sure that they protect the people of Guam and making the corrections facility a safe place, that the corrections facility is an orderly place and that these officers uphold the highest integrity,” Tenorio said.
Guam Department of Corrections Director Fred Bordallo speaks at an oversight hearing at the Guam Congress Building in Hagåtña on Friday, Dec. 29, 2023.
