Man arrested in connection to several thefts

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — A man was arrested on suspicion of being involved in several thefts, burglaries, child abuse and aggravated assault.

On Thursday, police officers apprehended Alcander Salas, a 31-year-old man who had been the subject of a wanted flyer in connection to several reports of theft of property, burglary and motor vehicle theft.

The Guam Police Department on Friday stated in a press release that it issued a flyer for Salas who was sought in connection to reports of thefts and burglaries at schools, “the theft of the Guam Power Authority (150-kilowatt) (Deahan) generator from the Swamp Road” area and solar lights reported stolen from the Toto church social hall.

GPD further stated several sightings of Salas in the Dededo area led to his apprehension and arrest in connection to 13 police reports.

The reports include burglaries, thefts, criminal mischief and criminal trespass to Wettengel Elementary School and V.S.A. Benavente Middle School along with burglaries to the GSI North America warehouse on Route 3.

Salas was arrested in connection to 150 gallons of diesel fuel that was reportedly stolen from the Guam Waterworks Authority and burglaries to residences in the Adacao and Lada Gardens areas.

According to GPD’s press release, Salas was also arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault, family violence, use of a deadly weapon, child abuse, family violence, no booster seat, reckless driving, eluding, defective rear license plate lamp and expired registration.

The release does not include the exact dates of when the reports were filed. According to Post files, the stolen generator incident was reported Oct. 12 before the generator was recovered along Ysengsong Road in a heavily vegetated area along Chalan Palauan about a month later.

Since his arrest, Salas has been confined at the Department of Corrections facility in Hagåtña, and the case was forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General.

Charged

Shortly after the announcement of Salas’ arrest, he was charged in the Superior Court of Guam in connection to incidents at the GSI warehouse.

According to the complaint, on Oct. 9 at about 3:14 p.m. officers responded to a burglary and they met a man who reported one of the company vehicles had been broken into. Some tools were stolen and an office had also been broken into. Additionally, the front gate had been wide open, and the front gate’s lock was missing.

Officers saw that the office and company vehicles, a Ford F150 and a Ford Escape, all appeared to have been burglarized.

The complaint stated two days later, officers responded again to the warehouse to learn the Ford F150 was missing, the Ford Escape was broken into and the Ford Escape was missing its battery.

Additionally, a Toyota 4Runner was also broken into.

“The report indicates that all three vehicles appeared to have their gas tanks open and their gas siphoned from their respective vehicles,” the complaint stated.

Damage to the cars totaled $1,900 while the items stolen from the warehouse, which included tools, ladders and chain saws, were valued at $30,000, the complaint stated.

According to the complaint, when Salas spoke to police he admitted to stealing tools and to stealing the Ford F150 from a “blue warehouse” and told officers he stole them so he could sell the items for “ice.”

Salas was charged with theft of an automobile, two counts of burglary, five counts of burglary to a motor vehicle and aggregated theft as second-degree felonies. Salas was also charged with aggregated theft and five counts of criminal mischief as misdemeanors.

The AG’s office noted Salas’ other arrests were being reviewed for probable cause.
