JACK Bao, a QQ Car Rental agent, said tourists recently experienced a burglary on Beach Road.

Their car was broken into on Friday evening while they were barbecuing near the 13 Fishermen Memorial Monument.

Bao said when the tourists, who were also his customers, went back to their vehicle, they saw that the convertible soft top had been punctured and a door was opened.

Bao believes that the burglar used a wire or another tool to unlock and open the door from the inside.

The tourists told Bao they lost items because of the burglary. They also called the police and filed a complaint.

Asked for comment, the Department of Public Safety spokesman, Sgt. Fred Sato, said an investigation is ongoing and that Bao or other QQ Car Rental agents may contact (670) 664-9000 to request information.

Bao said it costs around $55,000 to purchase and ship a convertible to Saipan. Its soft top is not repairable, he said, adding that he needs to replace it, and until then, the car cannot be rented out to other customers.

As for the car parts, they may take a month to arrive on island.  Bao said this particular model costs a tourist $120 in rental fees a day.

He said until the burglary, his customers seemed to be enjoying their time on island.

“They are very good customers,” he told Variety. “It’s already their second time to visit Saipan…. But after this they [stopped their vacation]. Their plan was to stay for 14 days but they stopped after this happened. They are from China, but they say they don’t want to come to our island anymore.”

He said they may post negative remarks on the internet about Saipan as a tourist destination.

“People [in China] will learn that Saipan [has] no safety. They won’t want to come over,” he added.
