Woman banned from Pay-Less, allegedly tells worker she was going to steal items

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — A woman banned from all Pay-Less Supermarket locations was accused of trying to steal store merchandise before police found her with methamphetamine.

On Christmas Eve at about 7:20 p.m. officers with the Guam Police Department responded to a theft complaint at Pay-Less Supermarket in Micronesia Mall where they met with an employee who said Barbara Baza, 53, “attempted to leave Pay-Less without paying at the register,” according to a magistrate’s complaint filed in the Superior Court of Guam on Tuesday.

“(The employee) said that (the) defendant admitted to having unpaid items in her bag and has taken from Pay-Less in the past. (The employee) told police that (the) defendant was banned from all eight Pay-Less stores,” the complaint stated.

The employee detailed the items Baza allegedly tried to steal, which included a toy, hair product and a Christmas card, which had a total value of about $100.09, according to the complaint.

Baza was subsequently arrested and taken to the Dededo precinct, where a black pouch in Baza’s possession was searched in her presence.

According to the complaint, police found a small plastic container in the pouch which had 2.37 grams of a white crystallized substance and a glass pipe. The substance was tested and yielded a presumptive positive result for methamphetamine.

Baza was charged with possession of a Schedule II controlled substance as a third-degree felony and attempted retail theft as a misdemeanor.
