Guma’ Hustisia Covid-19 screening and security zone nears completion

(Press Release) — Construction of the Covid-19 Screening and Security Zone or SSZ located at the front entryway of the Guma’ Hustisia in Susupe is set for completion in mid-January of 2021. Inclement weather conditions and other factors briefly delayed the project. The SSZ comes in the wake of the Covid-19  pandemic,  secured  by  federal  funds  through  the  Coronavirus  Aid  Relief,  and  Economic Security Act.

The Judiciary received its allocation of CARES Act funds from Gov. Ralph DLG Torres and Secretary of Finance David DLG Atalig  in June 2020. Since then, the Judiciary has used the funding to prepare for, respond to, and mitigate the spread of Covid-19 by taking up projects that  will  ensure  compliance  with social distancing  mandates,  implementation  of sanitization measures, and reduction of in person contact.

One of these projects is the 3,000 square foot SSZ, which will screen court patrons and staff while shielding them  from the natural elements.  In addition to security features such as scanning machines and metal detectors, the space will include a waiting area large enough for patrons and staff to comply with social distancing precautions and UV-ray light technology to disinfect the air, surfaces, and patrons’ personal belongings.

“In the next week, there are several minor site works remaining to be built to meet ADA requirements, including new curb and accessible ramps,” said Sonia A. Camacho, Director of Courts. “We are grateful for CARES Act funding allocated to the judiciary to make this important project possible.”

The SSZ joins other ongoing projects at the Guma’ Hustisia, including those for mold remediation and installation of an HVAC system. At the current pace, these projects will allow the judiciary to reopen two Superior Court courtrooms by mid-January.  Full occupancy of the Guma’ Hustisia is anticipated for June 2021.

The judiciary appreciates the public’s patience and cooperation as it continues to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all who visit the Guma’ Hustisia in the upcoming months.
