Tropical storms threaten Marianas

BEACHGOERS, mariners and residents have been advised to exercise caution due to strong currents along the reef lines.

Two tropical storms near Chuuk and Yap were expected to bring rainshowers, gusty winds and large ocean swells to the CNMI and Guam.

The Emergency Management Office, in conjunction with the National Weather Service on Guam, yesterday issued a high surf and small craft advisories due to an active monsoon trough south of the Marianas that was moving to the north slowly, bringing scattered rainshowers and winds.

These advisories were in effect since Friday.

“Large ocean swells generated by persistent monsoon flow southwest of the Marianas will bring hazardous surf to the islands today and through Monday,” EMO said.

As of yesterday afternoon, tropical storm Chataan—which means “rainy” in Chamorro—was located at approximately 260 miles east-southeast of Chuuk.

Tropical storm Rammasun was located at about 220 miles northwest of Yap.

While the storms were unlikely to pass through Guam or the CNMI, the monsoon could bring wind and rain to the islands.
