9-year-old boy arrested for stealing phone cards, money

A NINE-year-old boy was arrested after he was caught stealing $20 cash and $229 worth of prepaid phone cards from a store in Garapan on Wednesday morning.

The boy was released to the custody of a Department of Public Safety juvenile detective.

Investigation showed that the boy was seen going back and forth around the counter at 99 Cents Supermarket at 4:03 a.m.

The suspect reached over the counter and grabbed an item from the cash register. He placed the item in his pocket and walked away from the counter.

A customer at the time wanted to buy a calling card, but the store’s employee could not find the cards.

At 6:49 a.m., the boy returned to the store and purchased a soda drink and a chocolate bar.

The employee confronted the boy and asked him who stole the phone cards and money. They boy did not respond to the questions.

But as the boy was leaving the store, he told the employee he was the one who took the items. He then ran away.

Witnesses told the police they saw the boy taking an item from the cash register and placing it in his pocket. The witnesses told the boy not to do it, “but he went ahead.”
