Guards catches suspected burglar

A SECURITY guard caught a 25-year-old man breaking into one of the rooms at the Hyatt Hotel in Garapan and stealing some items on Sunday.

Leeroy Nekaifes Fitial was held for burglary and theft. He was taken to the Superior Court for a bail hearing yesterday.

But Fitial denied the allegations. He told the police he was looking for his brother who rented a room in the hotel. He said he went inside the room because it was not locked.

According to 23-year-old Yumi Karino, at 12:30 midnight on Sunday, she and Hana Tahara left Ayako Fukui sleeping in the room and went to another room to visit their friends.

At 2:15 a.m., Karino and Tahara went back to the room, but noticed that the door was locked from inside.

Karino said she called Fukui’s name, but no one responded. She observed that the lights and TV set in the room were on and that she could hear a man’s voice talking.

A few minutes later, the room’s lights went off and the door opened. A man later identified as Fitial came out and talked to Karino but “she could not understand him.”

Karino touched Fitial’s pocket and took out a bottle of perfume and cosmetics. But the suspect allegedly placed back the items into his pocket and ran away.

Karino grabbed the suspect’s shirt to stop him, but he managed to run to the fire escape stairway.

The hotel’s security guard caught the suspect at the parking lot.

In other news, a woman said her purse containing $200 cash, an ATM card, a credit card and other items were stolen during a party at the Carolinian Utt Pavilion in Garapan on Sunday.

The complainant said she left her purse on the table, “but after 15 minutes it was gone.” She was celebrating her son’s first Holy Communion at the time.
