Lawmaker notes CUC billing error

“I hope that this is an oversight on CUC’s billing system and that this error is corrected at the earliest possible time,” Rep. Francisco S. Dela Cruz, Covenant-Saipan, said in a letter to Muna.

Dela Cruz said the subsidy provided to CUC by Public Law 16-2 will all go toward the payment of the agency’s fuel expenses for its power plants.

“With such a subsidy it is quite ironic and strange that now the CUC customers stand to gain a measly credit on their non-fuel charges,” Dela Cruz said, adding that crediting non-fuel charges to CUC customers was never the intent of lawmakers.

What they wanted, he said, was to give credit on the fuel charges at the rate of 30 percent for residential customers and 10 percent for businesses.

This is what they proposed in House Bill 16-120, which is now awaiting action in the Senate.

He also noted “issues” with the new billings sent to CUC customers after the passage of P.L. 16-2.

He said that during a meeting between CUC officials and lawmakers, it was agreed that they would wait for the agency to come up with different options as to how the credit should be applied to its customers’ electric fuel charges.

Dela Cruz said CUC must act immediately on these issues so that its paying customers can get some relief.
