Palau young netters made good showing at NPQ

Ernestine Rengiil, coach of Palau’s team said that the four young athletes showed their form and elevated their game during the tournament.In the 18 and under  girl’s division, Palau’s Marica Otto finished in sixth spot while Abigail Gbewonyo finished 11th.There were 11 players under this category,Rengiil said this is Gbewonyo’s first time to join the tournament while it is Otto’s second time. Otto was in 8th in last year’s tournament.In the 13 and under boy’s division, Kaito Fuji finished 9th place out of the 16 players who competed in this division.Ayana Rengiil, who played in the 13 and under girls division finished the 7th spot out of the 12 players that competed.The NPQ took exception to Rengiil performance describing her as “an exciting little nine year old girl with happy feet from Palau.”Rengiil said there was a total of 51 players who joined the event with young netters coming from Guam, Federated States of Micronesia and Commonwealth of  Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI).CNMI dominated the event. Rengiil is hopeful that in next year’s tournament, she can encourage more players to sign up and train in preparation for the games.“We are encouraging parents to enroll their kids into the program for a chance for them to travel to Guam next year,” Rengiil said.The Palau Tennis Federation (PTF) is currently holding a tennis clinic for young girls and boys.Yje clinic started on June 9 and will conclude on July 8.Rengiil who is also a member of the PTF will start holding tennis classes at the Palau Pacific Resort (PPR) next week.The program will run from August to May next year and for the players, netters will be chosen to compete in the NPQ next year.For young athletes interested in enrolling tennis classes, Rengiil could be reached at 4883935.
