During a meeting at the Saipan Grand Hotel last night, CUC Power Division acting manager, Gary P. Camacho asked the with the Oceania tournaments’ local organizing committee for the specific time frames of all the events so that they can try to figure out which time exactly they avoid power outage in Susupe where the track and field facility for the event is located.Camacho said the CUC originally scheduled two hours of power interruption a day in a given village on rotation, but due to additional problem with another engine in the power plant, they were unable to fully follow that.
The Oceania local organizing committee in earlier meetings, has repeatedly raised the power issue as they prepare for the world-class sports events. In the face of the continuing power outages on the island, committee chairman, Rep. Ramon A. Tebuteb found it necessary to include the CUC to the committee so that it can assist in the best way they can to run the tournaments smoothly.
It will be the first time the CNMI will be hosting the two Oceania tournaments.
Camacho told Variety that CUC is also excited to have the wonderful event and he is personally happy to be involved in the program.
However, Camacho told the committee that while the CUC staffers are now doing their very best in repairing the power plant, he can not guarantee 100 percent that there will be no power outages during the Oceania tournament week.
But he said again that they will the do the bests they can to minimize outages and accommodate anyone.
In fact the power plant workers are trying to get the engine fixed and hope to get things done before the event starts.
The CUC he also said can not bring back generator to the Oceania event because those where needed in water wells and stations. Besides the kind of generators the CUC has are too small to cover such a large event.
Over 300 athletes and federation officials from 21 Oceania Athletic Association’s member federations are expected participate in the tournaments.
