He said it appears that consumers, because of the power increase has instituted their own energy saving measures.Peak hours are usually at 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Isechal said low usage indicates that consumers are using electricity wisely.With this, THE Palau Public Utilities Corporation (PPUC) said its procurement price of diesel oil has risen sharply.PPUC Business Manager Sirino Hideo said this month PPUC is purchasing diesel oil from its supplier at $4.11 per gallon which is 42 percent increase from January and 81 percent up from one year ago.Hideo however said compared to other countries in the Pacific Rim, PPUC’s  still collect the lowest rate.Hideo said that PPUC rate is only  $0.30 cents per kilowatt hour for 500 kwh per month compared to Marshall’s $0.33 cents, Chuuk’s $0.37 cents, Kosrae’s $0.39 cents and Pohpei’s $0.43 cents.PPUC will impose new rates but will collect it from the consumers by starting July 1.Residential consumers who consumes less that 500 kwh a month will be entitled to a subsidy according to the new law.Small businesses which makes use of 2,000 kwh per month are also covered by the subsidy.The $3 million subsidy recently became law. The money came from Taiwan grant which is earmarked for airport improvements.
