He said the Public School System plans to implement a “hybrid remote/onsite learning system” in which some classes are conducted online and others are held on campus.
A former Board of Education chairman, Benavente said peer learning or interaction with classmates is very crucial in early childhood learning.
Getting along or working together stimulates the children’s interest in learning, he added.
But right now, social distancing is necessary, Benavente said.
“Children like to connect with each other. This stimulates their learning ability. They need to sing in class, spell words and read aloud. So I want to hear from PSS how they are going to make this or its equivalent happen while ensuring the children’s safety,” he added.
He said his committee will continue to work with PSS and the BOE to address this and similar concerns.
