Aguon said there are probably only a few people “who are doing it, but we should not wait until the problem becomes unmanageable. We should conduct an aggressive campaign to stop these illegal activities that are harming our environment.”
During their recent cleanup drive, Aguon said he and Alexander picked up trash at some of the popular beaches around the island, including those in Kagman and Marpi, from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Aguon said the government should help prevent illegal dumping, especially near the pavilions and beach areas.
The anti-littering law should be enforced and violators should be held accountable, he added.
He said the cooperation of community members is also very important nowadays in light of the limited work hours of government field maintenance personnel.
