The commission discussed its purpose and the history of the Covenant to establish a Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands in Political Union with the United States.
The commission’s purpose is to listen, educate and present to the people of the CNMI the islands’ current political status and solicit public input about this status, along with other political status options.
Public Law 19-63 created the Second Marianas Political Status Commission to examine the political relationship between the United States of America and the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas Islands, as mentioned in the Covenant.
The law creating the Commission was enacted for the purpose of determining whether some other political status would “better enable the CNMI to fulfill their aspirations of full and meaningful self-government; and for other purposes.”
The commission is in the process of launching a website that will provide the public with resources, presentations and records.
“We invite the public to attend future public education forums on Saipan, Rota and Tinian. Upcoming events and meeting dates will be updated on our Facebook page,” the commission aid.
