BOE approves relocation of Da’ok Academy to SSHS

The associate commissioner for student and support services Dr. Yvonne Pangelinan, said the Federal Emergency Management Agency has obligated about $1.5 million for the construction of a new building for the academy.

In January, the board approved the construction of a new building for Da’ok Academy on the Marianas High School campus.

But Pangelinan said it is “more appropriate to relocate and rebuild the academy” at SSHS.

Da’ok Academy principal Jonathan Aguon told the board that compared to MHS, the SSHS campus is large enough to accommodate Da’ok school.

The plan calls for the construction of a Da’ok building with five classrooms, two office spaces, and an assembly area or cafeteria.

Aguon said the building will be constructed on a piece of land between SSHS and Koblerville Elementary School.

He added that the Northern Marianas Technical Institute will also be relocated to an adjacent area, “which is good because we have a strong partnership with them in terms of getting our students into the trades pathways.”

Typhoon Yutu destroyed the Da’ok Academy building located on the MHS campus in Oct. 2018.

Since then, Da’ok Academy has been holding classes at the NMTI campus in Lower Base.

Da’ok Academy serves students who are at risk of not graduating from high school.
