JAMES Cortez, a Guam-based e-sports tournament organizer, is inviting players in the CNMI to take part in the Battle Royale Duos Showdown, a Call-of-Duty Mobile e-tournament set to take place on Dec. 10.
He said the tournament is open to teams of two with a prize pool of $100 going to the single team that comes out on top after three rounds of play. The winning CNMI team will be paid via PayPal, Cortez added.

Competitors will also be emailed a copy of the rules upon registration.
For Cortez, the tournament is an opportunity to develop the e-gaming talent in the entire Marianas, and is an opportunity to “build an e-bridge” between Saipan, Tinian, Rota, and Guam.
Cortez himself has competed and performed in e-tournaments in the states with his e-sports team, Alpha Legends Gaming.
After noticing numerous gamer tags that featured “670” or “671” in the Call-of-Duty mobile lobby, Cortez said he and his team decided to begin linking the Mariana islands via e-sport competition.
He said while the tournament is open to players from outside the Marianas, it’s his goal to keep the tournament as local as possible.
“I want the lobby majority to be from here — Guam, Saipan, Rota, and Tinian,” he said.
So far, 10 teams have already registered to compete, Cortez said, adding that his goal is to have between 20 and 25 teams in total.
Cortez said this is just the beginning, as Alpha Legends Gaming hopes to leverage the December tournament into future monthly events, and then into an e-sport’s season that encompasses the entire Marianas.
“There are lots of gamers who say they wish they could [compete in e-sports]. We don’t want them doubting themselves. Your wish is our command,” Cortez said.
He believes gamers from the Marianas could develop their skills locally, and then compete in regional, national or international tournaments.
“The Oceanic region deserves recognition and for [Call of Duty Mobile] this is where you can start. Any true gamer come put your foot forward,” Cortez said.
