Month-long veterinary clinic starts on May 23

THE Saipan Humane Society, in partnership with the Saipan Mayor’s Office Dog Control Program, will conduct a month-long spay and neuter clinic starting Tuesday, May 23.

Lauren Cabrera, co-founder of the Saipan Humane Society, said two veterinarians will arrive on island for the clinic, and one of them is Dr. Whitney Collins who provided veterinary care to more than 70 pets in her previous visit in March.

The other veterinarian requested anonymity until her arrival since she will also visit her loved ones, and she wants to surprise them.

In her last visit, Collins trained Saipan Humane Society volunteers in various veterinary procedures such as conducting a clinical assessment, blood draws, and humane euthanasia for animals that are suffering.

For the upcoming clinic, “we will do surgery four days per week until June 14,” Cabrera said.

Collins will stay on island longer than a month and will perform surgeries and consultations for complicated cases as well as  provide rabies vaccines, Cabrera said.

During the month-long clinic, there will be laboratory services for the Fluorescent Antibody Virus Neutralization or FAVN test which measures the response of an animal’s immune system to the rabies vaccine. The test is for animals moving to designated rabies-free jurisdictions like Guam, Hawaii, Japan, and other islands or countries.

Cabrera is encouraging community members to take advantage of the program and the presence of the veterinarians who can provide the pet care, which is normally not available on island.

A message of thanks

Cabrera would like to express her gratitude to businesses and community members on island who are supporting the month-long veterinary clinic.

Saipan Vegas Hotel is hosting Dr. Collins while AK Toyota is providing a car for her entire stay.

“We also have other generous donors providing lunches for our volunteer teams including Godfather’s, The Shack, Spicy Thai, American Pizza Bar & Grill. Shell donated a gas card, and Gold’s Gym donated passes for one vet who wants to work out during her long volunteer trip,” Cabrera said.

She would also want to thank Brabu Pharmacy for donating an advanced binocular microscope with digital camera.

“With this microscope we will be able to conduct testing for diagnosing skin conditions, specific parasites found in feces, blood counts and more,” she said.

According to Cabrera, they are really trying their hardest to provide veterinary services and diagnostics for people’s pets at affordable rates.

Appointments can be self-scheduled on www.saipanhumanesociety.org/. You can also email info@saipanhumanesociety.org or send a message to (670) 838-7387.

Cabrera is requesting community members not to call their phone number since there are only two volunteers who can pick up the numerous phone calls they receive.
