Port police officer, 3 others injured in Piti crash

HAGÅTÑA (The Guam Daily Post) — A Port Authority of Guam police officer and three others were taken to the hospital after a three car crash in Piti.

After photos and videos showing traffic, lane closures and three damaged vehicles in Piti circulated on social media Thursday afternoon, the Guam Fire Department, Guam Police Department and Port Authority of Guam issued statements related to the incident.

GFD spokesperson Nick Garrido first stated at 1:43 p.m. that units responded to a reported three-car crash on Marine Corps Drive near the Veterans Cemetery, where four occupants sustained minor injuries and were all transported to the hospital.

“One vehicle had caught on fire. Another vehicle involved a Port police officer, and he was transported to Guam Memorial Hospital for evaluation,” Garrido added.

GPD officers from the Southern Precinct also responded to the accident, according to police spokesperson Officer Berlyn Savella. She confirmed that two occupants had nonfatal injuries.

The Port also issued a press release with a statement from Port Police Chief Jesse Mendiola.

Mendiola explained in the release that the collision occurred at the intersection of Route 1 and Route 6 in Piti.

“One of the vehicles involved was a Port Police vehicle being driven by an officer who was on duty. The officer was taken by ambulance to the hospital for treatment,” Mendiola stated in the release.

The car that caught on fire had two occupants, who were also taken to the hospital by an ambulance. The driver of the third vehicle was injured but declined medical treatment at the scene, according to Mendiola, who added the accident is being investigated by GPD.

The Guam Daily Post obtained several photos of the accident, which showed a vehicle that appeared to have rear ended the Port police vehicle. The vehicle that caught fire was on the opposite side of the road.
