(SIS) — Saipan International School, a distinguished participant in the groundbreaking environmental sustainability pilot program offered by the Mariana Islands Nature Alliance, proudly announces its remarkable achievements in plastic recycling and creative exploration.
Over the past year, SIS’s Environmental Club has harnessed the power of a state-of-the-art 3-in-1 plastic recycling machine to shred, melt, and mold plastics. As part of this initiative, the club has successfully collected an impressive 164.89 kg (362.76 lbs.) of plastic, specifically 40,291 type 2, 4, and 5 plastic caps, during the month of October alone.
Utilizing shredded plastics, students have engaged in the innovative process of pressing various items using molds. The results have been astounding, featuring creations such as small bowls for sustainable planting, geckos (Go Geckos!), bag clips, fishing floaters, and iconic latte stones. The program boasts a diverse range of molds, with several more awaiting exploration by the enthusiastic participants.
Once the molding process is complete, the products make their way to the art room, where students from different art classes use them to fuel their creative endeavors. Selected finished products are now available for purchase at Marianas Creations, with all proceeds contributing to the acquisition of new molds designed by the students. Additionally, funds raised are earmarked for an anticipated trip to Malaysia, where students aim to visit the origin of the 3-in-1 machine and gain insights into the global impact of their sustainability project.
Teacher April Liske-Clark expresses pride in SIS’s commitment to environmental stewardship, stating, “Our students have not only demonstrated remarkable dedication to sustainability but have also embraced creativity as a driving force for positive change. This initiative exemplifies our school’s ethos of fostering responsible citizens with a global perspective.”
