CHIEF Judge Ramona V. Manglona of the District Court for the NMI sentenced MD Ikbal Bapari, also known as MD Ikbal, to time served for illegal possession of a handgun on Wednesday.
Ikbal has already served 14 months and one day in prison.
He will also be placed under supervised release for three years, and will perform 50 hours of community service in lieu of a fine at the direction of the U.S. Probation Office.
He will likewise pay a special assessment fee of $100 immediately after sentencing.
Ikbal informed the court that he has surrendered his passport to the Rota Department of Public Safety.
After sentencing, Judge Manglona allowed Ikbal to be released.
At the hearing, Ikbal was represented by attorney David Banes while MD “Ripon” Ahmed served as the defendant’s interpreter.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Albert Flores Jr. appeared for the federal government.
On June 28, 2022, a grand jury indicted Ikbal on the charge of “illegal alien in possession of firearm.”
According to the indictment, on or about May 5, 2022, Ikbal, “then being an alien illegally and unlawfully in the United States, did unlawfully, willfully, and knowingly possess a firearm, to wit, a .40 caliber handgun, model Glock 22, serial number WHZ254, in and affecting interstate commerce.”
The indictment included a notice of forfeiture. Upon conviction of Ikbal, “he shall forfeit to the United States pursuant to Title 18, United States Code, Section 924(d) and Title 28, United States Code, Section 2461(c), any firearms and ammunition involved in the commission of the offense, including, but not limited to: .40 caliber, model Glock 22 handgun, serial number WHZ254.”
The warrant for Ikbal’s arrest was executed on June 13, 2022.
He pled guilty to one count of illegal possession of a handgun in August 2023.
