Rota casino commission convenes

Besides Songao, Ephrem S. Taimanao, Melchor A. Mendiola, Abelina T. Mendiola and Justin S. Manglona and municipal treasurer Francisco M. Atalig also took their oath of office before the mayor.

Atalig will also act as the treasurer of the commission.

After the oath-taking ceremony, the commission immediately convened to elect its officers and draw lots to determine their terms of office.

Timanao was elected vice-chairman while Manglona was named secretary.

Manglona will serve two years; Abelina and Melchor Mendiola, three years; Songao and Taimanao, four years.

During their first meeting, Songao thanked the mayor, the municipal council, the Rota legislative delegation, the Legislature and the resident directors for supporting the commission.

Songao also commended former Commerce Secretary Pedro Q. Dela Cruz, who headed the Rota economic development council, for his persistent efforts in pushing for the ratification of the casino initiative.

In an interview with Variety, Songao said the commission is asking the support and cooperation of the mayor for their office’s initial funding “so that we can get the necessary supplies and equipment.”

The commission will temporary hold office at the annex of the Antonio Camacho Atalig Memorial Library until they can afford to have their own office.

Songao said they will  seek funding assistance from Gov. Benigno R. Fitial, Lt. Gov. Timothy P. Villagomez and the Legislature.
