Fitial will ask Covenant Party to look for new running mate

Fitial and Villagomez sat next to each other during the Liberation Day parade on Friday.

Villagomez left after the event while the governor, who was with the first lady, stayed briefly to greet well-wishers.

Fitial said the lt. governor hasn’t talked to him about his decision to leave the Covenant Party.

“I’m not aware of that,” the governor said when asked if he had been advised that Villagomez no longer wanted to be his running-mate. “If he doesn’t want to run with me I respect that. I will ask the Covenant Party to seek a running-mate.”

Asked if he still wants to seek re-election, Fitial said: “If the people still need me I am here for them.”

Asked about his choice for running mate in 2009, the governor declined to comment.

Villagomez was asked last month if he had rejoined the GOP. “My family,” he replied, “has always been associated with the Republican Party. I am also associated with the Covenant Party. This is America.”

GOP president Ed Tenorio has declined to comment.

Villagomez earlier told the Variety he was no longer committed to the Covenant Party.
