Civic Action Team (CAT) 133-24 have completed at least two community construction projects during the three and a half months they are in Palau.
LTJG Riley Smith , Officer-On-Charge of the CAT said that aside from the construction projects , the team is also involved in Medical Civic Action Program (MEDCAP) and running an apprenticeship program.
Completed projects are the Melekeok Bathroom Facility and Peleliu Memorial repairs.
The bathroom facility amounted to at least $47,000 while Peleliu Memorial repairs cost $20,500.
The team is now conducting a grading of the Ngchesar State road and three upcoming construction projects are the Meyuns and Koror Elementary Schools and the Airai Health Clinic.
The 13-man team was deployed in Palau in April and will end their tour of duty in November.
HM1 Montoya Gunn, the Navy CAT’s physician assistant has seen at least 772 patients covering 13 states.
During their deployment, the team also re-opened the Camp Katuu clinic on a limited basis as agreed upon with the Ministry of Health.
The team also carried out community relations missions such as showing of movies at Camp Katuu, participation in various community and sport events.
The team has also forged a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Bureau ofArts and Cultural Affairs and Airai State moved the World War II- era anti-aircraft gun to the Camp Katuu for restoration and display.
In conjunction with this, the team hosted a class open to the public on the methods and techniques used to restore the weapon.
For three and a half months the team also conducted monthly maintenance of the Peleliu WWII memorial and Angaur WWII cemetery.
Included in the team’s mission is also providing technical assists in the community.
