Police, fire academy applicants undergo final phase of screening

DPS Commissioner Clyde K. Norita said the applicants are going through the third and final phase of the selection process.

“Those who have passed the placement  and agility tests will undergo interviews, and we are running their names through a background check to see if they have no arrest records — we want to make sure they’re clean,” Norita said.

He said over 40 individuals showed up for the tests and training but only 20 will be able to join the police/fire academy.

Norita said they will be ranking the applicants based on the interviews and the background checks when making the final selection.

Last month, the applicants underwent a three-day physical agility test at the Ada Gym. The physical agility test was conducted by PO3 Frankie Pangelinan for the police cadet applicants, and Lt. Jesse Mesa for the fire cadet applicants.

The physical agility test was a series of three test units where the applicants were made to execute push-ups, sit-ups, and finish a one-mile run within an allotted time.

The results of the placement and  agility tests were submitted to  DPS.

This year, there are 20 slots for police cadets and 16  for fire cadets.

“Those who can make it to the top will be chosen to fill in the vacancies in the department,” Norita said.
