Dilapidated reading resource center, classrooms at SAES

In 2006, the school asked the Public School System to fund the needed repairs, but  San Antonio’s reading resource center still has leaking roof, electrical problems and unsafe conditions.

Last school year, San Antonio had 325 kindergarten to sixth grade students.

They were accommodated in 17 classrooms of which two were used for bilingual classes and one served as the counseling office.

This September, the school anticipates a slight increase in the number of students and expects to hold “traveling classes” on campus.

No additional classroom has been built despite the school’s long-standing problems with overcrowded classrooms.

But some classroom windows and doors have been repaired.

The school’s reading resource center is also being used as venue for meetings by students and teachers.

The center used to be the counseling office but it had to transfer to another room because of the center’s “inconvenient conditions.”

The reading resource center is not the only facility that is unsafe and not conducive for learning — the classrooms at Buildings E and C have damaged walls and are termite-infested.

San Antonio has 14 classroom teachers of whom eight are considered highly qualified — they have bachelor’s degrees, teaching certificates and have passed the Praxis tests.

But the school’s SAT-10 results for school year 2007-2008 were among the lowest in the CNMI.
