DEPARTMENT of Community and Cultural Affairs Secretary Mary Margaret Sablan has resigned for health reasons, Variety learned.

She submitted her resignation letter to Gov. Arnold I. Palacios a couple of weeks ago, but her resignation took effect on Friday, Aug. 25.

Variety was told that before she turned in her resignation letter, Sablan talked to the governor and Lt. Gov. David M. Apatang about her health condition.

A former NMI Museum director, Sablan was appointed by the governor as DCCA secretary in February. The Senate confirmed her nomination in March.

During the House Ways and Means Committee budget hearing in June, Sablan said she wanted to cry because of her office’s lack of funds.

“So honestly, I’m very depressed coming here. I want to cry because what am I defending? Zero,” Sablan told lawmakers.
