Associate judge Robert Naraja ordered Ramon A. Bermudes to post $1,500 cash bail, attend court hearings, obey all commonwealth laws, surrender all travel documents, and not leave Saipan without the court’s permission.
He was also ordered to have no direct contact with the victims in the case.
The court at the same time imposed a $50 fine against Bermudes for a traffic case in 1993.
His bail will run concurrently with the traffic case and he was remanded back to the Department of Corrections for custody after the hearing.
Bermudes has been charged for one count of assault and battery, and another count for criminal mischief.
In an affidavit, Detective Andrea C. Ozawa of the Criminal Investigation Division-domestic violence section said they received a call for assistance at around 11 p.m. on Aug. 9 regarding a domestic violence in Chalan Kanoa.
Ozawa said police officers who responded to the scene saw a woman holding her swollen forehead which she reported was caused by her brother in law, Bermudes, who punched her.
Police learned that the victim’s husband was also attacked by the defendant.
Bermudes later threw rocks at the victim’s pick up truck, police were told.
The defendant’s wife, who is the victim’s sister, came home from a party at 10:40 p.m.
The defendant’s wife was driving the car and when she parked it, the defendant started yelling and cussing at them.
The defendant then picked up rocks and threw them at the truck, the affidavit stated.
It added that Bermudez punched the victim’s husband who was still in the truck.
When the victim tried to pacify the defendant, he punched her on the forehead instead.
The defendant next ran to the garage, picked up a table and threw it at the window before running to the back of the house.
The defendant surrendered to the police on Aug. 11. He was arrested and turned over to the Department of Corrections where he was booked and detained.
