CUC power plant division loses over 2,000 work hours from days off, sick leaves

According to the power plant’s employee attendance record from June to July, the division’s five components have incurred  losses in man hours due to sick leaves and annual leaves filed by employees.

The power generation division is composed of the mechanical, electrical, warehouse/procurement, administration, and operations/maintenance departments.

The mechanical department lost 541.5 work hours; electrical department, 223.5 hours; warehouse/procurement, 121.5 hours; administration, 63.5 hours; and operations/maintenance, 1,272.5 hours.

The mechanical department has nine staff; electrical, five; warehouse/procurement, four; administration, three; and operations/maintenance, 26.

Of the 26 employees from the operations department, two have already retired from service – one on Aug. 15. and the other on July 31.

CUC Executive Director Antonio S. Muna has asked the Legislature to allow the utilities agency to hire 12 guest workers for the power plants.

On Monday, the House of Representatives passed H.B. 16-142 to permit CUC to employ guest workers.

Last September, the contracts of 20 nonresident workers assigned to the power plant were terminated to give priority to local hires.

CUC power generation manager Almondo C. Santos said the removal of the guest workers “dramatically impacted” their overall operation and resulted in the decline in morale of the current and now overworked staff.
