League organizers urged to prepare enough fund for utility fee

Sports and Recreation Division Joe Lizama in an interview said that aside from paying the usage fee upfront, league organizers should set aside an amount for the utility fee that, unknown to many, are paid on monthly basis.

Lizama has sought the help of Northern Marinas Amateur Sports Association in convening all the officials of ongoing tournaments in the sports complex.

Lizama wants to remind sports league organizers of unpaid utility fee. He called for a meeting last week but nobody showed up.

Unlike the usage fee which is paid prior to the opening of the league, the utility fee fluctuates defending on the monthly government power rate and amount of it in the certain number of hours.

In softball field which has operational 20 spotlights or example, the rate for the month of March is $0.376 per kilowatt hour.  To get the utility fee, this rate is multiplied with the number of spotlights and hours.

For youth, school and local leagues and tournaments, the utility fee in Oleai Sports Complex is $10 per hour in indoor games and ball fields.

For professional and amateur teams, the utility fee is $26.50 per hour or kwh.

In the past, Lizama said everybody enjoyed free access to both the sports facilities and utility. The government shoulders the power cost regardless of who used the gym and the ball fields.

This however was changed in 2006.

Since then, the government will pay only for the utility of sports activities under government program. Other sports leagues should pay for the utility.
