BOE: Delay in opening of classes will require modifications, re-scheduling

The board has already delayed the opening of classes this year from August to September to realize savings for PSS.

On Friday, Gov. Benigno Fitial told BOE that in anticipation of the power outages that will continue occur until the Aggreko generators are installed on Sept. 14, the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. “will not be in a position to provide reliable utility services for the…opening of schools….”

BOE Chairwoman Lucy Blanco-Maratita yesterday said they will consult with the PSS leadership before replying to the governor’s request.

She admitted, however, that in light of the “many adjustments” that will have to take place if the opening of classes are again delayed, “I think there’s a possibility to go ahead with the current schedule.”

The new school year for PSS starts on Sept. 8.

Blanco-Maratita said the PSS leadership and school principal will meet today to discuss the governor’s request.

“They will submit a proposal to the board as to what is the best action to take,” she said. “Given the situation, the decision that will be made by the board will be based on data, information, and recommendations from the (PSS leadership).”

Blanco-Maratita said PSS will definitely be concerned “if (the power outages) will continue.”

She said the board may call for a special meeting this week.
