Tree collapses, causing traffic jam

Isidoro Cabrera, a government agricultural consultant, said they are expecting more trees, including flame trees, to fall this year.

The trees are being felled  by  Phellinus noxious, a fungal disease usually carried by water.

It attacks the root of a tree, Cabrera said, adding that they have no preventive measure against the fungus yet.

Phellinus noxious spreads especially during the rainy season, he added.

He expects an average of 50 trees that will be  attacked by Phellinus noxious each year.

But the fungus has not yet reached Tinian or Rota, he said.

Cabrera said the Department of Public Works yesterday cleared the debris on the road where the 60 ft. tree fell.

DPW personnel had to cut the tree and remove its branches. It took them four hours to finish the job, Cabrera said.

“Once infected by the fungus, the tree will be rotten after several months,” he added.

He said community members should report any trees showing signs of decay to avoid accidents.

He also asked  DPW to monitor  the other decaying trees on Navy Hill, Capital Hill, Airport Road and  Gualo Rai.
