Math and science fill students’ summer
(NMC) — Three students from Northern Marianas College’s Educational Talent Search program recently returned from an off-island trip after sharpening their math and science skills in a college setting in California and Hawaii.
The ETS program was invited to send active participants to the math and science summer program, which is designed to strengthen the math and science skills of participating students primarily in the 10th or 11th grade. The goal of the program is to help students recognize and develop their potential to excel in math and science and encourages them to pursue postsecondary degrees in these fields.
Kenlyn Butters, an incoming senior at Kagman High School, and Elton Escaros, an incoming junior at Marianas High School, flew to California to attend the summer program at Monterey Peninsula Community College. Naomi Cabrera, an incoming junior at Kagman High School, attended the summer program at Leeward Community College in Hawaii.
“The classes we took were beyond my expectations,” said Kenlyn Butters. “There were like regular classes, only condensed into a short period of time.”
At the summer programs, which lasted for six weeks, the students were exposed to classes that offered intensive math and science training. The students were also afforded the opportunity to interact with faculty who conduct research in math and science and were also allowed to conduct research procedure under the supervision of faculty members.
“There were students from California, Arizona, Idaho, Oregon, Saipan, Marshall Islands, Pohnpei, Guam, Nevada, and Hawaii,” said Butters. “During the time we were living together and basically doing things together, the whole group has bonded so strong that it became really hard to say goodbye.”
Squeak the cat up for adoption
(PAWS) — Squeak is a 2-year -old spayed female cat, who, until now, has been an exclusively indoor cat (litter box trained), although she thinks she might enjoy a bit of the great outdoors to become an indoor/outdoor kitty.
She loves to chase and meow at geckos and ants (she would be an excellent rat/mouse catcher, too!), is great with other cats and dogs (her current owner has fostered many of both, and Squeak loves to play with the kittens and sass the dogs!), and also great with kids.
She isn’t a big shedder, is a very meticulous groomer (she’s always bathing herself!), and loves, loves, loves to be brushed.
She also loves to sleep under the covers of her current owners bed, but don’t worry — she isn’t a bed hog!
Squeak will make an excellent cat for a family or single person who preferably already has a pet — either a cat or a dog — without some company, she may get lonely.
She could used to being an “only child” with some extra pampering. Her current owner is leaving island in two weeks so Squeak needs to find her new family quickly!

(PTI) — PTI, the CNMI’s leader in wireless communications, unveiled its latest upgrade to the No. 1 network in the Marianas with the launch of EV-DO on Saipan, Tinian and Rota.
PTI’s successful launch marks the first time that any carrier has introduced 3G technology to Micronesia and serves as another example of the company’s dedication to the CNMI.
According to PTI regional marketing manager Kathryn Barry, “We’re all excited about the launch of EV-DO and what it means to all of our subscribers in the Marianas. Now when people say ‘I’m in the Network,’ they’re also saying that they’re part of the fastest wireless network in the region. In the near future we plan on launching the same level of speed and performance to our IT&E subscribers on Guam.”
PTI general manager Larry Knecht said: “This is another example of PTI’s commitment to bring leading edge technology to the CNMI and Guam. We may be 10,000 miles away from the U.S. mainland but our residents have a network and prices every bit as good or better than our family and friends in the U.S.”
EV-DO is short for Evolution Data Optimized, and elevates the speed of the PTI’s network up to 10 times faster than the CNMI’s previous standard for wireless communications, familiarly known as 1X.
With EV-DO, business customers with smart phones can access e-mail, photos, spreadsheets and other large files via the Internet at previously unprecedented speeds to stay connected to the office.
Residential customers will enjoy a new world of entertainment thanks to EV-DO as their phones can easily access social networking sites such as MySpace, Facebook and Friendster.
EV-DO also gives PTI customers the ability to watch streaming video from the Internet as well as the ability to upload their videos to popular sharing sites like YouTube from their phones.
PTI is also offering its subscribers the opportunity to “Go Unlimited” with one of the new PTI unlimited data packages.
Subscribers with handsets can surf the Internet without using their plan minutes for $9.95 while smart phone subscribers can gain unlimited access to the Internet for $19.95/mo.
EV-DO is also a boon to all laptop users as they are no longer required to bring their laptops to a Wi-Fi hotspot to access DSL speeds.
The PTI Air Card gives users have the freedom to travel throughout the CNMI with Internet access at DSL speeds.
PTI Air Card plans are available for only $39.95/mo and include a free air card for customers who sign one-year contracts.
Those interested in taking advantage of the PTI Air Card without signing up for a plan may purchase the units for $50 and pay a month-to-month rate of $59.95.
Perhaps the brightest of EV-DO’s highlights is that PTI is offering it to its subscribers at no additional cost; only the cost of airtime.
Most phones from PTI are EV-DO capable but PTI subscribers need to stop into PTI’s new Wireless Express Center in Garapan or PTI Chalan Laulau location to have their phones flashed for activation free of charge. For more information, call 682-4PTI.
