The bill said that it is important to amend the law to honor the election laws so that when the vice presidential candidate dies during the election cycle, the presidential candidate can have the opportunity to chose a replacement running mate.
Isechal’s measure pointed out that the changes “will give effect to the mandate of the people as expressed in the popular initiative and will give the elected president of the republic the opportunity to work within a unified administration.”
The measure said that a person nominated as a substitute for a candidate should also be nominated by a petition in the same manner as the candidate who has died withdrawn or been disqualified.
The measure also stated that if a candidate who has qualified through the primary election withdraws, dies or declared incompetent, the primary election candidate for office who received third largest shares of votes shall be placed in the ballot in a manner deemed satisfactory for the purpose by the Election Commission.
