Ten inmates are running the Subelek farm

Julio Omtei Ringang, chief of Corrections said that out of 92 inmates who are detained at the Division of Corrections, ten of them are now detained at the detention cell in Aimeliik.

These ten inmates are the ones planting crops and raising livestock at the Subelek farm. The program teaches the inmates farming skills and the products are used to feed the prisoners to help reduce the government cost in running the prison cell.Ringang said that Subelek farm is just one of the several programs to rehabilitate the prisoners.They also have GED program for the prisoners to help them get a high school diploma even in prison and the Substance Withdrawal Addiction Treatment to rehabilitate drug dependents.Ringang said last year there were five inmates who got a high school diploma.The Chief said the inmates were also allowed to go out to engage in fishing activity.Ringang said of the 92 inmates, two of them are serving a life sentence.These two inmates have been in jail since 1987. One of them is serving a sentence for frustrated murder.Ringang added that there are also five detainees who are waiting for trials.
