The country is celebrating September is Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month, this month focuses on the importance of treatment and recovery.
“September is Alcohol and Drug Addiction Recovery Month, which emphasizes on importance of treatment and recovery and the positive effects that is a united community can have on those who are suffering from substance use disorders,” Alex Ngiraingas Addiction Treatment Supervisor said.He added, “overcoming alcohol and drug addiction takes a community effort. Even after a person completes a recovery program, the rehabilitation process continues and the road to recovery can at times be a challenge.”Ngiraingas said that the number of people in Palau referred to treatment and are currently enrolled in treatment is 114 clients since January 1, 2008 to Sept. 16, 2008.The center said that the ages of the clients receiving services ranging from as young as 12 years old to 69 years old.Although these people are undergoing treatment they still need continued support from family members and community to successfully change their lives, Ngiraingas said.He added that family members and friends of people recovering from substance abuse disorders will play a very critical role in their efforts.“They can encourage and even join the person in recovery to eat healthier diet or take up activities that promote a healthier lifestyle,” Ngiraingas said.Ngiraingas said that employers too can show support by being flexible allowing their employees to attend their scheduled appointments and meetings that they need to complete their programs.He added that they can also promote and expand on the company programs that encourage healthy living habits and lower stress in the workplace.“There are many people in recovery who are seeking the second chance, but they need committed support from all levels of our community,” Ngiraingas said.The center was opened for touring yesterday.Ressy Ellis, 60 years old who completed the treatment in July in his essay said that he has been drinking since he was 13 years old.He said in his essay written in Palauan that alcohol was the root of all his problems.Ellis said the problems ranges from divorce, marital problems, fights and financial instability.He said because of too much drinking, he almost killed a brother earlier this year.Ellis started treatment in March this year and graduated July.He said that Bedochel helped him quit alcohol including tobacco use.He said his life is better now and his family happier.
