Palau gov’t owes $2.1million in power bills

In a letter to Palau leaders, Palau Public Utilities Corp. general manager Saturo Adachi said if payment is not received from the national and state governments, their delinquent power bill  could reach  $4. 2 million in Jan. 2009.

“Although, PPUC realize that both ROP and the state government are providing crucial and critical services which impacts the lives of every citizen to the Republic of Palau disrupting power services would impair the government priority obligation to all its citizens,” Adachi said in a letter to President Tommy Remengesau, Senate President Surangel Whipps and Speaker Antonio Bells.Adachi said the unpaid bills may result in a huge financial impact on PPUC.Since the government has made no effort in making payments, PPUC has no choice but to start the disconnection process, he added. He said although he understands that cutting off power will disrupt government operations, it is also the responsibility of PPUC to provide power to every home, business, office and agency in Palau.
