Climbing steps to save Kayangel

KAYANGEL State received funding ($6,142.00) from AusAid to build a Composting Toilet.  The toilet was built at Kayangel Elementary School as part of the school’s effort to promote environmentally friendly practices.

Kayangel Elementary School Students were asked to write compositions about the toilet.  Below are excerpts of the students’ work.“We wrote a proposal to the Australian Government asking them to give us some money so we could build a new toilet,” wrote McGriff Ngiraked. “Big thanks to the Australian Government and also many thanks to our Emily Omes Takawo Owens, our Peace Corps volunteer, for also making all this possible.”“Now I can poop knowing that my waste will not seep into our pristine waters and can be great fertilizers for my sweet potato farm,” wrote Juana Johnson. “We now have a Super Toilet.”“The toilet is also good for the fish,” wrote Parker McKinnon. “ It keeps all the smelly stuff away from the fish that we hunt and eat.”“We pump our water from underground reservoirs,” wrote Ramona Johnson. “This toilet goes well with our new water system. All the human waste is kept out of the water we use.”“Kayangel state may be flat and we can see the ocean from our classroom, but we, the students of J.F.K., go to the second floor to do our business,” wrote Geomas Masang. “Isn’t that the coolest thing?”
