So why would the people vote for John H. Davis Jr.?
“I represent the only real change,” says the Independent congressional delegate candidate as he urged voters to end the “good-ol’ boys politics” that has marked the CNMI’s political system for many years.
Davis, who arrived here 22 years ago as a medical professional and is now teaching U.S. government at a high school, said he is the only candidate with no family connections.
He said he tried visiting villages but he stopped it because “it’s time consuming.” He now conducts his campaign by holding forums where not every one comes, and yet, “I’ve been able to sway a lot of people.”
Davis said he is running because of the people who are looking for somebody else other than those connected to them by blood or party.
In an interview on Wednesday, he said if the CNMI people are serious about ending “politics as usual” they need to consider his candidacy.
If they are really interested in electing the most viable and the best candidate, he added, then they should listen to what all the candidates have to say.
“Otherwise, we’ll be just doing the same things we’ve done years and years ago,” he said.
Davis believes that the people would vote for him because they now realize they need a person who understands the issues and has the best qualifications.
He said he tells the people what he will do once elected, and voters have to decide what’s best for them.
But based on the number of people showing up at his forums, Davis could not tell if the people are genuinely ready for real change.
Those who come to his forums and hear what he has to say have become very supportive, he said.
“I’m just hoping that’s good. I don’t really know,” Davis said, adding that he is still confident that there are CNMI voters who could see him as the candidate who understands what’s going on and how the system works.
“I’m the only candidate who says the CNMI needs to stand on its own feet,” he added.
