The new lamp posts with 500-watt bulbs will charge energy during the day and will automatically switch on in the evening, according to Public Health Deputy Secretary for Hospital Administration Pete Untalan
The old lamp posts that get power from the Commonwealth Utilities Corp. have been removed.
Untalan said the Energy Office, which has been providing the hospital with new energy projects, was able to purchase the solar-powered lights through a federal grant.
Aside from being one the most important establishments on island, CHC is also one of the biggest users of electricity, Untalan said.
The lights in every area in the hospital, including the restrooms, now have motion sensor switches, he added.
The hospital also installed energy-efficient exit lights.
“Anytime that we minimize our use of power with these energy-efficient facilities, it is good. It is the hospital’s positive step in reducing its electricity costs,” he said.
According to Untalan, they are still identifying other areas of the hospital, like the parking lot, that can use with solar-powered lights.
