The residents parked their vehicles along Airport Road at 3 p.m. and waited for the arrival of James Connaughton, chairman of the U.S. Council on Environmental Quality who was expected to be flown to the island in a helicopter.
Connaughton will meet with lawmakers today to discuss the monument proposal.
Those opposed to it who attended yesterday’s rally included former Mariana Islands Nature Alliance member, John Gourley, his wife, Lisha, and some government officials.
Gourley was among those who resigned from MINA due to his opposition to the marine monument proposal.
Angie W. Iginoef-Mangarero executive director of the Carolinian Affairs Officials, said 300 to 500 people showed up “to let the feds know that we are against it.”
Iginoef-Mangarero said the majority of Carolinians are against the proposal.
Her husband Manny also joined her in the protest action.
