Lack of funds delays water repair projects

Bruce Megarr, CUC deputy director for water and wastewater, cited as an example the Donnie Springs project whose purchase order has been pending since Oct. 1, 2006.

“I know how quickly our pumps go down and I know we get parts if we buy in quantity but we don’t have funds to do that,” he told Variety.

Despite the lack of funds, CUC Executive Director Antonio Muna said they are addressing the water issue in a manner that will avoid a “rate shock.”

“We rehabilitate the system but we don’t put a burden on owners by increasing the rate to make up for our losses,” he said.

According to Muna, the lack of funds is preventing CUC from addressing its “water issues.”

CUC, he added, has no back-up pump.

But Muna said CUC will soon procure the materials it needs to address the island’s water problem.

CUC, he added, must rehabilitate its water system but this needs the cooperation of the legislators and the governor.

“CUC is rate driven and it can only pay based on what it collects,” he said, adding that if the rate is not sufficient then it can’t provide the services its consumers desire.
